The Condition

Menopause and perimenopause are a natural part of a woman’s life, caused by a fall in hormone levels usually between the ages of 45 and 55, but it can happen earlier. Perimenopause begins when your periods become irregular and menopause is when your periods stop for a period for 12 months (and you’re not using hormonal contraception.)

The Effects

Symptoms are different for everyone, and can occur during perimenopause, menopause and even post-menopause. Some women have to deal with a huge impact on their physical health, emotional wellbeing and quality of life, while others have no symptoms at all.

In addition to changes in the frequency and heaviness of periods, common symptoms include hot flushes and night sweats when the face, neck and chest feel very hot or cold, sleep problems, mood changes, memory problems, weight gain around the stomach and upper body, vaginal dryness, irritation and/or itching, and urinary tract infections.

The Solution

There’s no routine test for perimenopause and menopause, which is why it is important to see a doctor who may diagnose it based on your age and symptoms.  They will then be able to recommend treatments, the most well-known being Hormone Replacement Therapy, or HRT.

There are also non-hormonal treatments such as antidepressants, as well as herbal remedies and complimentary medicine that a lot of people find useful.
